As we welcome a new year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the significant milestones achieved by the 2020 Farmers Cooperative in empowering Black and small-scale farmers. Under the leadership of Executive Director Sharon Mallory, our cooperative has made remarkable strides toward agricultural success. Here’s a closer look at our key achievements and what they mean for our members and the community.

1. Expanded Regional Impact

This year, we positioned ourselves to hire Regional Directors for the Southeast and Southwest regions. This expansion allows us to enhance member support and grow our reach, providing localized resources and guidance tailored to the unique needs of farmers in these areas. By investing in regional leadership, we are committed to ensuring that farmers receive the assistance they need for sustainable growth.

Why It Matters:

Having dedicated Regional Directors creates a stronger support network, fostering a closer relationship with our members. Localized leadership ensures that concerns are addressed promptly and resources are allocated efficiently, empowering farmers to thrive.

2. Membership Growth

We’ve made significant strides in membership growth by hiring Farmer Liaisons to assist in guiding farmers through their journeys. Our re-launch of the membership drive aims to expand our collective capacity for agricultural growth. Together, we believe that collective efforts lead to greater success.

Why It Matters:

A thriving cooperative is built on strong membership. By increasing outreach and inclusivity, we create a diverse community of farmers who can share resources, knowledge, and support, ultimately enhancing the agricultural landscape as a whole.

3. Resource Development

In a significant achievement, we secured over $2 million in grants to support member programs, training, and operational sustainability. These funds will allow us to continue providing essential resources that are vital for our farmers' success.

Why It Matters:

Access to financial resources is crucial for the growth of small-scale and Black farmers. By securing grants, we can invest in training programs that enhance skills and knowledge, ensuring that our members are equipped for success in a competitive agricultural environment.

4. Advocacy for Underserved Farmers

We strengthened partnerships with key organizations and policymakers to amplify the voices of historically underserved farmers. Advocacy is at the heart of our mission, and we are committed to ensuring that these farmers receive the support and recognition they deserve.

Why It Matters:

Advocating for underserved farmers not only addresses historical inequities but also fosters a more inclusive agricultural community. By working together with our partners, we can push for policies that benefit all farmers, creating a more equitable future.

5. Educational Programs

Education remains a cornerstone of our mission. This year, we delivered numerous workshops and webinars covering essential topics, including sustainable farming practices, accessing USDA programs, and cooperative leadership. Our goal is to build capacity and provide farmers with the knowledge they need to succeed.

Why It Matters:

Empowering farmers through education leads to better practices and more informed decisions. By expanding our educational offerings, we prepare our members for compliance with industry standards and help them navigate the complexities of modern agriculture.

6. Enhanced Communication

In our continuous effort to improve transparency and accessibility, we launched a revamped website and upgraded technology resources. These enhancements allow for better information-sharing and coordination among our members, streamlining communication within our cooperative network.

Why It Matters:

Effective communication is essential for collaboration. By enhancing our digital resources, we ensure that our members have access to the latest information and can easily connect with one another, fostering a sense of community and support.

7. Product Distribution Success

We are thrilled to announce the completion of our wash pack house for vegetable aggregation and distribution. Furthermore, our participation in the farm-to-school program has boosted sales for our farmer-members, showcasing the power of local food systems.

Why It Matters:

Improving product distribution is vital for increasing sales and market reach for our farmers. Initiatives like the farm-to-school program not only support local farmers but also contribute to healthier communities by providing fresh produce to schools.

8. Operational Efficiency

This year, we implemented efficient systems for membership coordination and farmer resources, enhancing both internal and external capacity. Streamlining operations allows us to provide better support to our members, optimizing our overall effectiveness.

Why It Matters:

Operational efficiency translates into improved services for our members. By refining our processes, we can focus on what truly matters—supporting our farmers and helping them succeed in their agricultural endeavors.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate these accomplishments, we remain committed to building a resilient and inclusive agricultural community. We invite all our members to stay engaged with our initiatives and look forward to sharing more updates at our upcoming board meeting.

Together, we are making significant strides toward a brighter future for agriculture!
